When I was a youngster, my parents took my brother and I to The Nevele (yes it's Eleven backwards). It was a resort hotel that was very popular back in ye olde glory days. I don't remember much about the trip except that the decor was really old-school and they had a Spy Hunter arcade cabinet there that I played a lot. We were enrolled in some sort of day camp situation. From what I recall, I had fun and the place was really nice.
Last night, my parents came over for dinner and we were talking about upstate New York and somehow the Nevele was brought up. We didn't talk too much about it because there really wasn't much to talk about. It was a fun vacation. Today, on a whim, I decided to research it and see if I could drum up some kind of silly memories.
The fifth google link that comes up was The Nevele Sucks page. As we all know, a company has to have pissed someone off pretty bad to get their very own sucks page. Having actually been there, I couldn't imagine the complaints anyone would have that would warrant this. Well, apparently, sometime after my visit, the place took a steep nosedive. The reviews on that page are well worth the read.
Reviews typically say that the buildings, furniture, and decor are decrepit and old, there's rarely hot water, there's mold and mildew everywhere, bed bugs, roaches, horrific food, and very nasty staff. However, a visit to their website reveals glorious postage stamp sized stock photos.
If what these reviews are saying is true, than it's a shame. Reading through the forum on the sucks page is rather interesting even though there's only like 12 posts left. Some ex-employees defend it as a sort of dysfunctional family and others consider their lives forever ruined by management. Read some of the posts for allegations of abuse, neglect, and asshattery.
Reviews aside, I would simply decline to stay at the hotel due to the use of HTML tables and image maps to layout their web page. Tsk tsk! They say it hasn't been updated in 30 years; perhaps my high score in Spy Hunter is still on the board?

I was raised in Westchester County, and I've never heard of this place, though I have heard of Ellenville.
I've been to Mohonk Mountain House, which is beautiful. Glad you have your memories, looks like that's the all that's worth having from there now!

My wife and I are looking for vacation locations because the summer is coming up. Since her parents have property in the Catskills area, we were thinking about going up there. I don't know, I'd rather go somewhere and gamble, to be honest.
